A Mother and Daughter reunion? Nope, a Mother and Daughter Apple Pie Competition

I’ve been aching to make an apple pie, but couldn’t bring myself to do it when temperatures were soaring through the 90’s.   Now that we’re averaging a cool mid 70’s (funny what your blood gets used to) here in the Low Country I figured it’s time to gear up the fall flavors. So today was a perfect day for the first apple pie of the season.   I was inspired by the Vanilla Garlic blog.   Over there it’s Christmas cookie recipe testing time. Great idea!   Planning ahead.   I thought I’d get a jump on the pre preparation wagon too.   Instead of breaking out the cook books and magazines a week before; spreading them all on the kitchen counter and then promptly make myself crazy looking for recipes that I know I used, but wasn’t wise enough to categorize, computerize or Tastebookize them.   I enlisted my mothers’ help.   Then thought again, lets make this fun.

She is the baker of all bakers in my opinion, whipping up brownies in warp speed time with just a “I would love some brownies” look from my son.   Presto, he’s got them.   Now with two cooks in the house, this could get serious for us and lucky for the inhabitants.   Today we’ve got a little “friendly” competition going on…two bakers, two apple pies…one winner.   The recipe will be used for our Thanksgiving feast.   I already spotted her apples…hers are red mine are green.   We’ll see what she uses for her crust.   I’ll post the results tomorrow on the new Kitchen Competition page.   Judges will be our usual in house experts.
