In Search of a Green Goddess

Lets step back in time…the year is 1923, the place the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.   The executive chef wanted to pay tribute to George Arliss and his hit play The Green Goddess.   So, what better way than with a salad dressing?   A very tasty salad dressing that was a roaring hit through the twenties.   Now, fast forward… the year is 2008, the place, Publix on Hilton Head.   A man wandering the aisles in search of Green Goddess Dressing, clutched a list from his wife and came upon my Mom.   He asked her if she knew where he could find this elusive dressing.   Mom led the gentleman from refrigerated section to the bottled dressing aisle searching, for the mysterious dressing, but with no luck.

She sent the man on his way and continued with her shopping.   My mother came back from the store killing herself laughing about the man who said he couldn’t go home if he didn’t produce a Green Goddess.   I’ve heard of it, but never had it and never saw it here on Hilton Head.   The events of the day proved to be Mom’s inspiration for this weeks Test Kitchen (which from here on will be posted on Tuesdays).   Please click on her page (towards the top…right by the title) and see what all the hoopla was about in the twenties and in Publix last week for this oldie but goodie dressing!
